I have to admit that I find the news from Iraq so disturbing that I try not to read about it. I have done my patriotic duty by sending in my absentee ballot and aside from that I just don't look. But someone I know sent me this and it seems worthy of passing on.
Seymour Hersh, who uncovered the My Lai massacre in Vietnam and the Abu Ghraib prison scandal in Iraq, received a disturbing phone call last month. An army lieutenant in Iraq told him that he and his men had witnessed a massacre of civilians--civilians they knew and had worked with-- by another army unit. (See story here ). After the CBS story on President George W. Bush's National Guard Service was shown to be based on false evidence, apparently purposely planted to discredit the reporters, no one wants to take a chance. The press has not picked up on Hersh's story.
As an American, I sincerely hope the story is not true. But it sounds very much like what can happen in a war. I had always hoped on the other side.
