Tonight three-quarters of the trains in France are not working. The railway workers are on a wildcat strike because last night a young woman conductor was raped in a train near Toulouse. Almost 20% of the train conductors in France are women, and they have been attacked more than the male conductors (almost 30% of the attacks). The young woman was attacked in an empty train. Tomorrow the strike may be continued.
I do understand the anger of the cheminots, but also of all the people in southern France who suddenly can't get home this evening through no fault of their own. But in France, going on strike is the first thing people do when they're angry. Not the last, as in other countries. It's a vicious circle because it means no one pays attention to grievances until there is at least a strike!
It is freezing cold in Paris at the moment, one of the coldest Januaries I can remember. It is cold and snowy across Europe, and even in Turkey and Tunisia. Homeless people are dying. The "Plan Grand Froid" has been put into place, but ordinary people are being asked to help by making sure no one is left outside in this weather.
