The Germans, of course, love to point a finger at the U.S. and are always going on about the American Indians. I guess it makes them feel better. In one section on the chaos in the city after the flood, Der Spiegel titled its article "Sklavenaufstand in New Orleans" (Slave revolt in New Orleans"), which I found very offensive.
The word Untergang, though, was just right, very powerful and hard to translate. It means defeat, but in the sense of a final defeat, a death, the fall of a city, an empire. Literally a going under. My poor New Orleans.
