Yesterday I arrived back in Paris after a turbulent flight. On the way into town, we were passed by a zippy little French VIP convoy of tiny cars, preceded by motorcycle cops waving people aside, and trailed by the usual opportunistic motards. Today I heard that Condoleezza Rice is in town, so maybe it was her.
Yesterday was also Yom Kippur and the synagogue not far from here was just getting out when I came by. There were four little brothers in jackets, yarmulkas and sneakers, talking a mile a minute and heading to the playground; two teenage girls in gypsy skirts, looking bored and skiving off; American businessmen leaning against a barrier; and a lot of dressed-up, relaxed-looking people. There was also a CRS riot police van on the corner in case of trouble.
The students have also arrived back in Paris. University starts in October in Europe. There were moving vans all over my neighborhood today. Here is a photo of a moving elevator. I had never seen one before I moved to Paris, but they are common here. They are used when there is no elevator, or when the staircase is too narrow, or when the staircase is very elegant.
It was a beautiful fall day. Here is a photo of a plane tree that I took while sipping a glass of rosé in a café yesterday afternoon.
