Maîtres mots

  • Il y a longtemps que notre pays est beau mais rude.

--Newspaper editor Olivier Séguret, 25 January 2012

The USA are entirely the creation of the accursed race, the French.

--Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966), writing to Nancy Mitford, 22 May 1957

Today the cheminots are:

  • "À nous de vous faire préférer le train!"
    "Voyager autrement"
"Avec le SNCF, tout est possible"
--Former ad slogans of the SNCF (French national trains), each in turn quickly dropped

Fun French words

  • ouistiti

    (literally: marmoset)
Etymology: onomatopoeia from the sound a marmoset makes. Actual meaning: this is what you say in France when you want people to smile for the camera.

Selon une étude réalisée par le fabricant d’appareils photo Nikon, le « ouistiti » utilisé en France au moment de se faire prendre en photo est le petit mot le plus efficace pour s’assurer un joli sourire.

Who's en colère today?

  • Private sector

First strike in 43 years at an aeronautics company in Toulouse, Latécoère

    Public sector

The SNCF (toujours eux), regional train employees in the Lyons area guaranteeing unpleasant travel from the 17th-21st December
Also yet another strike by Sud-Rail, a particularly truculent SNCF union in the south of France, this time five days in January: 6,7, 21, 22 and 23. "We have no choice." Right.

Marseilles trams on strike until February

i think your comments were really naive. Girls in France aren't giving Blow jobs at 14 perhaps but they are having anal sex at 16! islam is a fundamentalist religion, its just taken the west a long time to see it. and unfortunately the left that looked away during Nazism is doing it again, it has become more acceptable to be a muslim in the west, we are more likely to appease them, to blame their follies, as they do, on our own culture rather than look at the culture which is creating this. And you've proven their point, by saying that there is credence to their lifestyle - blaming the west - or a media study on a bunch of slutty kids in a big city, look instead what is lacking in islam - the illiterate women, the physical abuse, the lack of control women especially have in their own lives (that is, if they are not killed for getting raped or refusing to be raped or married to their uncle). If your first thought at reading this is why she must be a racist, step back for a second. Ignore french tv and focus on the truth.
give yourself even 10 minutes to read http://www.jihadwatch.org/dhimmiwatch/

or watch a translated video from Al Jazerra http://www.memri.org/video/

or wonder why it is not safe for you to travel on the metro late at night by yourself. is it the American girls who give blow jobs at 14 or is it the Muslim youth who grab, spit, steal and try to rape you on the metro. Or gang rape the teen girls of Sarcelles ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/audiovideo/programmes/crossing_continents/europe/1456204.stm ) It is not the Western culture that prevents me from wearing a Star of David on the streets of France, or carrying a bag from a casher shop. And who was to blame for kidnapping, torturing, burning, tying a Jewish man to a tree and then killing him?! Ah yes, Muslim youth! . http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3218190,00.html

which future would you want for your child?!

Today's quotation

  • In Paris, the purest virtue is the object of the filthiest slander.

–Honoré Balzac (1799-1850), in Scènes de la vie privée

À Paris, la vertu la plus pure est l'objet des plus sales calomnies.

Le petit aperçu d'Ailleurs

  • Annual Geminids meteor shower (shooting stars!) coming this weekend, if it's not too cloudy out at night.
