Late one night, driving across empty regions of the south of France in a tearing hurry, I discovered the warm voice of Evelyne Adam on Radio France Bleu Limousin. (France Bleu is the national chain of local radio stations.) She reminded me of my French "fairy godmother," a wonderful older woman who still says "Ma foi!" and took me under her wing when I first moved to Paris. She has many grandchildren and once in a while tells me that she has to grandmerder.
Evelyne has the same loving way of making everyone who talked to her feel important and valuable to society, even the tax lawyer and the little old lady who call in asking for "We are ze champ-yons" because their football team won. She gave you the sense that, in the words of Julian of Norwich, "all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well."
When I looked her up to add the link, I was surprised to see that she looks nothing like the elegant grandmother I imagined. More like J.K. Rowling.
