At the corner greengrocer, I was shooting the breeze with the old Tunisian man who runs it, whom I have known for years, when someone went by joking, "I hope that fruit isn't radioactive!" The radioactivity from Fukushima has now been detected over France and is more dangerous than expected.
"It's from Tunisia," the old man said.
"The poor Japanese," said someone else in the store.
"For us believers [pour nous les croyants], this is God's decision," said the old man, pointing upwards. "He is the one who decided that Japan is suffering. There is a reason for this."
